چکیده

This paper presents a model for solving a resource allocation problem (the ‘Screaming Generals’ problem) in which autonomous agents negotiate for use of the resources. The Screaming Generals problem is a test-bed for our ideas about task completion in a multi-agent environment with hard deadlines. Rather than analyze some specific negotiation scheme, we present a model that accepts the results of negotiation as input. Our characterization of the results of negotiation is based on the priorities built in to the negotiation scheme – for example, some negotiations commonly result in an approximately equal distribution of resources. Three different negotiation strategies are presented, and while these are by no means exhaustive, our framework easily accommodates the addition of new strategies. We then analyze how well the agents complete tasks under different negotiation inputs, using both analytical and numerical techniques. Our numerical techniques allow us to determine the regimes in which given negotiation strategies are superior to others, and to estimate the asymptotic rates of task completion as the number of tasks increases.

An Agent-Based Simulation for Investigating the Impact of Stereotypes on Task-Oriented Group Formation

In this paper, we introduce an agent-based simulation for investigating the impact of social factors on the formation and evolution of task-oriented groups. Task-oriented groups are created explicitly to perform a task, and all members derive benefits from task completion. However, even in cases when all group members act in a way that is locally optimal for task completion, social forces that ...

Task Scheduling Model Based on Multi-Agent and Multi-Objective Dynamical Scheduling Algorithm

With the increasing number of nodes in distributed systems, the complexity of task scheduling also increases. Therefore, how to schedule tasks reasonably is becoming more and more significant. Most traditional algorithms only consider a single condition without thinking over dynamic characteristic of system and tasks and lack of comprehensive measures. Therefore they cannot meet the needs of di...

Agent-based approach for cooperative scheduling

This paper studies the multi-factory production (MFP) network scheduling problem where a number of different individual factories join together to form a MFP network, in which these factories can operate more economically than operating individually. However, in such network which known as virtual production network with self-interested factories with transportation times, each individual facto...

Conversational agent or direct manipulation in human-system interaction

In this paper we investigate the usability of speech-centric multimodal interaction by comparing two systems that support the same unfamiliar task, viz. bathroom design. One version implements a conversational agent (CA) metaphor, while the alternative one is based on direct manipulation (DM). Twenty subjects, 10 males and 10 females, none of whom had recent experience with bathroom (re-)design...
